About this session

This 60-minute session offers participants a structured sound meditation experience using live Hand Pan music as the primary vehicle for nervous system regulation and deep rest. Sound and vibration have well-documented effects on physiological and psychological states — influencing brainwave activity, autonomic arousal, and subjective experience. In this session, Reo Matsumoto uses the distinctive resonance of the Hand Pan to guide participants toward a state of relaxation, presence, and inner attunement — what he refers to as "Music Medicine." Drawing on principles shared across sound therapy, somatic practice, and contemplative traditions, this experience is designed to complement the cognitive demands of a research conference by creating space for integration, reset, and embodied awareness.

"I share my pure energy and deep healing vibes through HandPan music, resonating with your heart, soul, mind, and body, attuning you to a state of relaxation and vitality. My HandPan music goes beyond being just music—it's a journey of healing, exploration, tuning, resetting, and self-awareness. It has truly transformed my life, and I want to share that experience with others, creating a space where we can resonate together and generate more interconnected energy. In essence, it can be called 'Music Medicine.'"
Biography
2005
Early Musical Journey
I began my musical journey in 2005 as a Human Beatboxer. From 2006 to 2009, I consistently secured first or second place in Japan's national beatbox competitions, performing over 150 live shows annually. In 2010, I claimed the title of Team Champion at the OFFICIAL JAPAN BEATBOX CHAMPIONSHIP #1, which led me to compete on the global stage.
2010
International Expansion
With just 3,000 yen in hand, I set off for Australia to restart my career through street performances and busking. In 2012, I met a like-minded street performer and formed the two-piece band Matsumoto Zoku, combining beatboxing, HandPan, and didgeridoo.
Global Impact and Festival Presence
Based in Europe, we brought our music to the world, performing at major festivals like OZORA Festival (7 times), Fusion Festival, Rainbow Serpent, and prestigious venues like Blue Note Place and WOMB TOKYO. Today, Matsumoto Zoku has evolved into a band with new guitar and bass members.
HandPan Sponsorship and Recognition
My career as a HandPan musician has been marked by an unprecedented number of sponsorship offers, especially for an Asian artist. In 2018, I became a sponsored player for the UK-based Meridian HandPan and Germany's Soul Shine HandPan. In 2019, I was endorsed by Yishama, considered the world's top HandPan manufacturer. Currently, I am an official family player of Ayasa Instruments, a world-renowned Dutch HandPan maker.
2019–2024
Building Japan's HandPan Scene
In 2019, I established Tokyo HandPan Lab., a collective to develop Japan's HandPan scene. Over five years, I hosted the Tokyo HandPan Festival three times, inviting international players and gathering enthusiasts from Asia and beyond. This initiative significantly shaped Japan's HandPan community.
Music Production and Releases
In the same year, I expanded my career as a music producer and beatmaker. My three hip-hop beat tapes, released via international labels, amassed over 1.1 million streams within just one year.
2020
Exploring Dance Music
Inspired by tribal cultures and multicultural jam sessions encountered during my travels, I began producing dance music in 2020. My tracks have been released by prestigious global labels, including SABI Records, Ohxala Records, StereoFox, O'Tawa Records, Yahala Yahala Records, Sounds of Khemit, HOLLE AND HOLLAND, AKASHA MX, Suleimen Records, and TheMagic Sun. Additionally, I became the first Japanese artist to release on Sol Selectas, a leading label in the organic house genre.
